Restore The Look, Feel And Function Of Your Smile!
Dental Implants
At Niagara Dental Centre, we understand that losing one or more teeth can have a major impact on the shape of your mouth, the appearance of your smile and the feel and function of your remaining teeth. Missing teeth can also affect your ability to speak, bite and chew food and can contribute to the degeneration of your other teeth.
Dental implants in Canada are made of titanium and are a practical way to replace one or more missing teeth and restore the function and appearance of your smile. Patients that struggle with loose or poor fitting dentures also benefit from implants. Implant-supported dentures, also known as anchored dentures, provide more stable support and eliminate gaps and shifting.
Dental Implant Placement
Dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone, and when the bone heals around it, become embedded into it, resembling the root of a natural tooth.
First, x-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. The dentist will administer local anaesthetic, and the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. Some implants have the ability to be placed, the post and anchor, at the same time. Healing after the initial surgery can take anywhere from 3-6 months, during which time, the artificial tooth is made, and fitted to the post of the implant. Several fittings may be required, to ensure the implant seats properly. Finally, the artificial tooth is attached to the implant in the mouth and the patient will feel like it is a normal part of their anatomy.
Post-care instructions will be given after surgery, and patients can continue to resume healthy eating and oral maintenance at home.
